Origine e giacitura

Il gruppo di minerali prende il nome da Robert Ferguson (8 settembre 1769 – 3 dicembre 1840), proprietario terriero, politico e collezionista di minerali scozzese. Dopo aver inizialmente ipotizzato che la fergusonite fosse solo un minerale, in seguito si è riconosciuto che si tratta di una serie di minerali in cui si possono distinguere diverse specie con diverse composizioni.cite-ref-2[2]
